| Non-technical Overview of the JAVA Language 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM Presenting for this session: Rickard Von Horn, Business Development Director, Education and Research Computing, Europe -- Sun Microsystems Inc. Special guest for this session: Dr. Rik Leenders, project manager -- SARA Academic Computing Services, Amsterdam, The Netherlands The city of Amsterdam recently initiated a project called CIAO (Computers in the Amsterdam Educational System), in which all elementary schools will get one computer per two children. Realization of the plan will take up to 2005, but in a pilot phase in 1997 the first 6 schools will obtain 15 network computers (NC's) each. As the project manager of the CIAO-project, Rik Leenders is responsible for the implementation and integration of computers and networks in all 212 Amsterdam elementary schools (appr. 65,000 students). The project is funded by the city of Amsterdam and the Ministery of Education. All major Amsterdam educational institutes are involved in the project. Since 1992, Rik Leenders has worked at the SARA Academic Computing Center, which is the combined computer center of the two Amsterdam universities. SARA is also the institute where the supercomputer for the Dutch scientific society is located. | |
